The following classes are held at Formosan United Methodist Church 788 Lewelling Boulevard San Leandro, CA.

The Beginner Level

The Beginner Level class is designed for 1st–2nd grade students with little to no prior exposure to Mandarin, focusing on building a strong oral foundation while introducing early literacy skills in a supportive and engaging environment. Using 《MeiZhou Chinese》 Level 1A and 1B along with integrated workbooks and character practice, students learn through songs, flashcards, and hands-on activities that make language learning enjoyable and meaningful. Students develop the ability to understand and respond to basic classroom Mandarin, introduce themselves, and use simple vocabulary with growing confidence, while building accuracy in pinyin and tones. The curriculum covers foundational topics such as greetings, numbers, family, food, and daily life, while gradually introducing character recognition and writing. By the end of the level, students are able to recognize 100–150 characters, write 80–120 characters, and read simple patterned sentences, establishing positive learning habits and a strong base for continued Mandarin study.

The Intermediate Level

The Intermediate Level class is designed for 3rd–5th grade students with 2–3 years of Mandarin learning, focusing on expanding literacy skills, developing paragraph-level communication, and strengthening overall comprehension. Using 《MeiZhou Chinese》 Level 3A and 3B (with possible introduction to Level 4), along with regular workbook practice and supplemental readings, students build on their existing foundation through structured and engaging instruction. Students learn to participate in short conversations, describe daily life and routines, share simple past experiences, and express preferences with basic reasons, while developing the ability to write short paragraphs. The curriculum covers topics such as school life, hobbies, food, shopping, home environment, health, and cultural traditions. As their literacy grows, students learn to recognize 300–500 characters, write 250–300 characters, read short passages, and use transition words to organize ideas, preparing them for more advanced Mandarin study.

The Advanced Level

The Advanced Level class is designed for 6th–8th grade students with 3–4+ years of Mandarin study, focusing on developing academic language skills and preparing students for high school Mandarin and future AP coursework. Using 《MeiZhou Chinese》 Level 4A and 4B (and beyond as appropriate), along with authentic materials such as videos, articles, and short essays, students deepen their proficiency through rigorous and engaging instruction. Students learn to communicate in extended sentences, narrate events across different time frames, express opinions with supporting reasons, and compare cultural practices, while developing the ability to write multi-paragraph compositions. The curriculum explores AP-aligned themes including family, technology, environment, culture, and global awareness. As their literacy advances, students recognize over 1,000 characters, write 700–1,000+ characters, and engage with both adapted and authentic texts, building the skills and confidence needed for advanced Mandarin study and future AP success.
